$1 million grant from Jeanne Pratt to help St Vincent’s vision for cancer care
Construction of stage one of the new cancer centre at St Vincent’s Melbourne has begun with a supporting gift of $1 million from Jeanne Pratt towards the $14.8 million project.
In welcoming the Pratt donation, Deputy Appeal Chair and Appeal Patron Frank Costa said that as a close friend of the late Richard Pratt and the Pratt family, he regarded Mrs Pratt’s gift as special. “Cancer touches us all and the Pratt family has experienced its impact directly over recent months,” said Mr Costa, who heads the Costa Group and serves as the Geelong Football Club’s President.
“We’re also very pleased that Richard’s daughter Heloise Waislitz has been a member of the St Vincent’s appeal committee for the past 12 months. It’s through this kind of support from generous individuals in our community that we’ll change the way people feel when they come in for treatment.
I urge all Victorians to help make this centre a reality,” Mr Costa said.to treat twice as many people as the hospital’s existing cancer services. Mr Hargrave, the CEO and Managing Director of Skilled Group, said the appeal committee was pleased that it now needed just another $2.6 million to reach its target.
St Vincent’s Chief Executive Officer, Associate Professor Patricia O’Rourke, said the quality of the cancer care which St Vincent’s staff provided was “second to none”. “Recent recognition in the Victorian Public Healthcare Awards demonstrates the quality of our cancer care. But the environment where that care is provided is now more than 40 years old.
This grant from Jeanne Pratt, and others like it, will enable us to deliver our first class care in a first class environment,” Associate Professor O’Rourke said. Jeanne Pratt said it was a great privilege to support a project which enhanced the late Richard Pratt’s legacy. Construction on the St Vincent’s Cancer Centre has recently commenced, with the project’s first stage due for completion in the next 12 months.
